Privacy Policy — Portfolio Motif

1. Overview

Portfolio Motif is a client-side financial analysis tool that runs entirely in your web browser. Your portfolio data — including holdings, position values, account balances, and order history — is processed locally on your device using JavaScript. This data is never transmitted to Portfolio Motif servers.

This Privacy Policy explains what limited information we do collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to that information. We have designed Portfolio Motif with data privacy as a foundational principle, not an afterthought.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly

If you contact us via email at contact@portfoliomotif.com, we receive your email address and the content of your message for the purpose of responding to your inquiry. We do not operate a contact form that transmits data to a server.

Portfolio Motif does not require account creation, login, or any registration. We do not collect usernames, passwords, or stored credentials of any kind.

Usage data

Portfolio Motif does not currently implement analytics tracking or telemetry. No usage data, session data, or behavioral data is collected or transmitted from your browser to Portfolio Motif servers.

Financial data

Your portfolio data is loaded directly into your browser's memory when you upload a file. It is processed locally. It is not transmitted to Portfolio Motif servers at any point.

3. How Your Financial Data Is Handled

This is the most important section of this policy. Portfolio Motif is architected so that your raw financial data never leaves your device:

All portfolio data is processed locally. When you upload a holdings CSV or XLSX file, it is parsed entirely within your browser using JavaScript. No file upload to a server occurs. Your holdings, account values, position history, and gain/loss data remain on your device.

localStorage is used for session persistence. Your parsed portfolio data is stored in your browser's localStorage to preserve your session across page refreshes. This data exists only on your device and is fully under your control. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's localStorage or using the "New File" option within the app.

AI analysis features send prompts to third-party APIs. When AI-powered analysis is used (where available), a text prompt — which may include financial figures as analysis context — is sent directly from your browser to the relevant third-party AI provider (Anthropic or xAI). Portfolio Motif does not intermediate, log, or store these requests. The AI providers' own privacy policies govern how they handle this data (see Section 4).

Raw financial data is never transmitted to Portfolio Motif. No holdings file, CSV, account balance, order history, or position data is sent to any Portfolio Motif server or database at any time.

4. Third-Party Services

Portfolio Motif integrates with or relies on the following third-party services. Each receives only the data necessary for its function:

Anthropic (Claude API)

Used for AI-powered portfolio analysis features. When triggered, analysis prompts including relevant financial context are sent directly from your browser to Anthropic's API. Anthropic's privacy policy governs this data.

Stripe

If payment processing is applicable, payment information is handled directly by Stripe. Portfolio Motif does not receive, store, or process credit card or payment information.

Google Fonts

Portfolio Motif loads typography (Syne and JetBrains Mono) from Google Fonts. Your IP address may be sent to Google's servers as part of this request. No personal data beyond standard HTTP headers is transmitted.

5. Data Retention

Portfolio Motif does not maintain server-side storage of user financial data. The only storage mechanisms used are:

Browser localStorage: Retains your uploaded portfolio data for session continuity across page reloads. This data lives only on your device. You can delete it at any time via your browser settings or by using the "New File" option in the app.
Email correspondence: If you contact us, we retain your email address and message content for the purpose of responding to your inquiry. We do not add you to any mailing list without explicit consent.

6. Cookies

Portfolio Motif does not use cookies for tracking, analytics, advertising, or any other purpose. The application uses browser localStorage — not cookies — to persist portfolio state between sessions. No third-party tracking cookies are set.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction (including under GDPR and CCPA), you may have the following rights with respect to your personal data:

Right to access: Request a copy of personal data we hold about you.
Right to deletion: Request that we delete personal data we hold about you.
Right to rectification: Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
Right to portability: Request your data in a portable format.
Right to opt out: Opt out of certain data processing where applicable.

Because Portfolio Motif does not store your financial data server-side, these rights apply primarily to any contact information you have provided directly (e.g., email address from correspondence). Your locally stored portfolio data can be deleted immediately by clearing your browser's localStorage.
